GRINDING STONE COLLECTIVE RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT FOR FIRST FOOD PROGRAMMING

The Grinding Stone Collective (GSC) is the proud recipient of a $10,000 Tech grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the digital services that drive our First Foods programming, including our A New Day for Old Ways Indigenous Food Sovereignty classes and our Inter-Tribal Food Pantry where we bring Native food producers and Native/Rural community members closer together by providing access to culturally aligned foods.

The First Foods Program promotes food sovereignty for indigenous peoples through community Education, Reciprocity, and Stewardship. We are an Indigenous-led program made by, and for, Indigenous people and our allies, as such, our educational series are led by indigenous culture bears and knowledge keepers. We at GSC believe that preserving Indigenous ecological knowledge in First Foods can only be achieved through Indigenous Food Sovereignty. We define Indigenous Food Sovereignty as the right to govern our own food systems from extraction to distribution using ancestral & contemporary knowledge. Our work helps facilitate this process by providing an Indigenized community-led food culture education that breaks the barriers to access that are experienced by Urban & Rural Natives.

Our Founder and Program Director Brooke Rodriguez explains "It's been really helpful for us to have the tech support from First Nations Development Institute because it helps indigenous grassroots communities like ours grow. A lot of times we don't have access to tools, programs and resources to advance our work that larger institutions have. Access to digital resources is crucial and allows us to streamline our workflow so we can focus on doing what we love, which is serving the native community and building food sovereignty."
