Happy Indigenous Day of Resistance

October 12th marks the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas

Happy Indigenous Resistance Day to my kinfolk across Turtle Island, the Caribbean & Abya Yala. About today: October 12th marks the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas. We as Indigenous People challenge the traditional narrative surrounding Columbus Day and, instead, celebrate the resilience and resistance of Indigenous peoples. On this day, we remember the historical injustices hashtag#colonization inflicted upon Indigenous communities, including enslavement, abuse, murder, forced displacement, resource extraction, cultural suppression, and settler occupation resulting from Columbus's arrival.

#IndigenousDayOfResistance is not just a day to reflect on the past but also to recognize the contemporary struggles faced by Indigenous communities, such as land rights, environmental protection, and preservation of our unique cultural identities. It's a call to action, urging solidarity and support for Indigenous voices in their fight for justice, self-determination, and the right to shape their own futures. On this day, we remember the resilience of our ancestors and renew our commitment to standing in solidarity with the people of Turtle Island, the Caribbean, and Abya Yala as we continue to resist and build toward sovereignty for our nations.
